MACEDONIA MARKS DAY OF REVOLUTIONARY FIGHT
The Republic of Macedonia marked the Day of Revolutionary Fight for the first time yesterday.
On the occasion, the state award "October 23" for achievements in science, culture, education, protection of state interests and promotion of state priorities, values and cultural heritage were presented at the Macedonian Parliament.
This year the award went to Dr. Tanas Vrazinovski - ethnologist and Prof. Dr. Tahir Zajazi for achievements in the spheres of science and education, and academician Gane Todorovski for achievements in culture. Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski attended the award presentation ceremony.
On October 23, 1893 at the house of Ivan Hadzi Nikolov in Solun, Hristo Tatarchev, Dame Gruev, Petar Pop Arsov, Anton Dimitrov and Hristo Botandziev established the Macedonian Revolutionary Committee, which later on became the Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (VMRO) or Internal Macedono-Adrianople Revolutionary Organization (VMORO). The organization was fighting for Macedonia's liberation with own forces without any help from outsiders.
The establishing of VMRO marked the beginning of Macedonian revolutionary movement, which after the Ilinden Uprising in 1903, Krusevo Republic and National Liberation War, resulted in creating a modern, independent Macedonian state.
