MACEDONIAN AJVAR BRANDED
National.
Macedonia's ajvar, a traditional appetizer or side dish made of roast paprika, will be protected with a law under the brand name "Macedonian Ajvar", Agriculture Minister Aco Spasenoski said on Monday.
He added that ajvar producers will undergo regular check-ups to make sure that the product conforms to good quality standards.
There will be sanctions for those deemed to be non-compliant with quality standards. The sanctions do not foresee pecuniary penalties (fines), but cancellation of manufacturing license. The authorities will seize the illegally manufactured ajar.
The branding of Macedonian ajvar will increase the price of the product, Spasenoski said.
The recipe of Macedonian Ajvar will be issued free-of-charge to companies interested in production.
Spasenoski said Macedonia will soon protect the production of Galicnik cheese, the white lamb cheese, the Vranec wine, the Kocani rice, the Tetovo beans, mountain tea, the Berovo cheese, Strumicka Mastika and Kavadarecka Rakija (brandy).
MD: They should have protected just the name "Ajvar", without the reference 'Macedonian' in it.

Sounds like a great idea WHAT MACEDONIA IS DOING protecting their products. It stops all the slimy Greeks jumping on the band wagon trying to claim that it belongs to them. Now they can spread the ajvar on their souvlakis.

Well.. I have no idea if we are trying to claim your products.. but I would like to taste Ajvar.
I assume it’s spicy, right?
Slourp!
He! He! Why not spread that avjar on souvlakis? If it’s good, it will increase it’s sales!

Ajvar is creamy rather than spicy. It's really good. Bulgarian lijutinitsa is spicy. Greeks could market a 'Greek Ajvar' or Makedoniko Ajvar or even Macedonian Ajvari.
