LETTER OF PROTEST TO SCHEFFER

National.

Macedonia has sent a letter of protest to the NATO Secretary General Jaap De Hoop Scheffer.

The protesting letter sent by the Defense Minister Lazar Elenovski refers to the incident that occurred in the course of the NATO military exercise Steadfast Junction in France, which forced Macedonian Army's officers to cut short their participation in the exercise, A1 TV Station reported.

On 22 May, two Macedonian officers who participated in the military exercise, were verbally attacked by a Greek officer, who demanded from them to take off their uniforms labeled with the name of their country - Macedonia.

Macedonian officers refused to do so, and after consultations with the ARM General Staff and the Defense Ministry, left the exercise early.

Because of this incident, the Defense Ministry cancelled the participation of two ARM HQ officers at the same exercise that took place in Norway.

This exercise was aimed at evaluation of the NATO forces and the Alliance's partners as part of preparations of the rapid intervention units' for participation in peacekeeping missions.

OLDEST HOMES IN EUROPE ORIGINATE FROM MACEDONIA

Culture.

An imposing selection of the most valuable Neolithic art unearhed on the soil of Macedonia has been presented in the National Museum of Slovenia in Ljubljana since 28th May. The opening ceremony was accompanied with the magnificent sound of a Neolithic flute – ocarina, played by the recognized expert in old music instruments Dragan Dautovski. Representative of both Slovenian and Macedonian sides addressed the gathering at the opening of the most valuable exhibition for the country and the archaeological science in general, entitled “Neolithic Art from Macedonia.” They included Peter Kos, director of the National Museum and Meri Anicin Pejoska, Director of the Museum of Macedonia, State secretary of Culture Elizabeta Kancevska - Mileska ands Director of the Directorate for Culture and Art of Slovenia Damjan Prelovseh.
As it was expected, the valuable artifacts unearthed in archaeological sites of our countries in the past decades, held in museums in Skopje, Bitola, Prilep and Stip, attracted attention with their specifics at the very beginning of the show. Out of 82 items, only 17 have been known publicly so far so the National Museum in Ljubljana has been given the special honour to offer a really exclusive presentation of cultural heritage from a key period in the development of the mankind (6.300 B.C. to 4.500 B.C.) during its Presidency of the European Union.

“The show is important because the Neolithic, the Early Stone Age was decisive for all forms of permanent living in settlements, in homes. That was a period when agriculture was being established as were all elements known to us today, that had not been known 10000 years ago. At the time when in Macedonia as the central part of the Balkans, it was a normal way of living, the nomadic way of life with hunting as the central part of the economic life was led in what is now Slovenia and West Europe. That means that we are somehow the successors of the lifestyle that started spreading from Macedonia to Europe 8000 years ago,” said archaeological and museum advisor Peter Turk, one of the authors of the text contained in a rich in illustration and factual data catalogue.

The two countries' embassies say their delegations left after learning that Macedonia would be identified as the Republic of Macedonia, the name recognized by the United States.

The Greek Embassy says that it made clear that it would not participate in international meetings in which Macedonia is not referred to as FYROM.

TEMPERATURE RISING TO A RECORD

National.

The hottest May day is set to emerge in Macedonia, as forecasters are predicting tropical heat with temperature up to 38 degrees C.

The extremely high temperatures, unusual for May, pose a serious threat to humans' health. The number of medical check-ups is on the rise. Doctors advised the citizens, especially those chronically ill, to stay at home and consume large quantities of water.

In the past 15 years, a total of 12 consecutive hottest years have been registered at global level. Heat waves are likely to occur worldwide, particularly in the Western Hemisphere, in the aftermath of global climate change.

Also expected is the rise in mortality (death rate) and morbidity in connection with high temperatures, particularly in urban areas.

Forecasters say there will be a slight drop in temperatures as of Thursday, with rain showers and thunders after noon.

The heatwave increases the threat of wildfires.

Crises Management Center cautioned the citizens to take extra precautions while conducting activities in forests and not to use flammable materials that might cause blaze.

The Center called on the citizens to immediately report any blaze or smoke and notify the relevant authorities or dial the emergency number 195. The Center also calls upon the citizens not to misuse the emergency phone number for false alert.

MD: They say upcoming summer will be even hotter than last year. Remember all the fires across Macedonia? Let's hope that will not happen again, if so, let them be more prepared!!

AUSTRALIAN MP DISCUSSES MACEDONIA

National.

Liberal Party deputy Luke Simpkins referred Tuesday at a session of the Australian Parliament to the official position of his country towards the naming of the Republic of Macedonia and Macedonians living in Australia, MINA reports from Perth.

Simpkins stressed that the current Australian stance on naming the Republic of Macedonia and the Australian citizens of Macedonian descent is insulting and abusive, and asked MPs how they would feel like if terms such as "Former British Colonies of Australia" or "Anglo-Saxon Australians" were used to name their country and its people.

He claimed there was no other case of racial discrimination of an community in Australia as the one of Macedonians, asking the Australian Government to follow the example of other countries, who address the Republic of Macedonia by its constitutional name in bilateral relations, whereas Australian citizens of Macedonian descent to be officially named Macedonians.

Macedonia's Ambassador to Canberra Viktor Gaber met Wednesday with MP Simpkins, thanking him for the public treatment of the issue. Interlocutors exchanged opinions on future activities of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Republic of Macedonia, where Simkinks acts as vice-chairman.

GREEK PRESS: MACEDONIA CONTINUES PROVOCATIONS

National.

The message "Thessaloniki is Macedonia's heartland" is a follow-up of Skopje's provocations toward Athens, Greek newspapers said on Tuesday.

Athens' dailies quote the stern reactions in Greece, prompted by the statement of Macedonian Archbishop Stefan during a memorial service in Rome at the tomb of the Pan-Slavic enlightener St Cyril.

The conservative Kathimerini daily writes about the latest tensions in Greek-Macedonian relations in the headline "Fresh FYROM Challenge".

The authorities in Athens fiercely responded to the statement of Macedonian Archbishop who said Thessaloniki is Macedonia's heartland. Opposition PASOK urged the authorities in Skopje to condemn such a provocative rhetoric, Kathimerini daily said.

Logos daily quotes Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis as saying that the neighboring country cannot look forward to Euro-Atlantic future as long as it remains captive to irredentist rationales of the past.

Apogevmatini daily writes about synchronized anti-Greek moves, noting that the messages during the Macedonian memorial service in Vatican were repeated during the massive rally of Macedonian Diaspora in Australia.

TENSIONS IN ROME

National.

Greece blamed the officials and church leaders in Macedonia of irredentist policy that jeopardizes the Balkans' stability and hampers the country's entry into EU and
NATO.

The latest verbal flare-up came during a memorial service in Rome at the tomb of St. Cyril on Saturday, after the statement of Archbishop Stefan, the head of Macedonian Orthodox Church, who claimed that Greece denies the existence of the Macedonian nation and Macedonian Church.

"St. Cyril, today in your and our Thessaloniki, everything you did has turned to stone. Today, in your city of birth, everything has been rendered ashes and dust, and not a single letter remains from your and our language. Today it is forbidden not only that this language be spoken, but its very existence itself. Everything Macedonian is persecuted and displaced, while the name of our country and church, and the truth itself, is disputed," Archbishop Stefan said during the memorial event for St Cyril held at San Clemente church in the Vatican.

Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis said "such irredentist statements are dangerous for regional cooperation and stability in the fragile region of the Balkans".

Bakoyannis said Archbishop Stefan's statements, made in the presence of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, were "extremely provocative and totally unacceptable", and proved "firstly, the correctness of the Greek arguments and stands that insist on the need for resolving the name issue.

"As long as the problem remains unsolved, it will serve as the tool and vehicle of an outdated and historically unfounded irredentism that is dangerous for regional cooperation and stability of the fragile region of the Balkans," Bakoyannis said.

"The neighbouring country cannot look forward to Euro-Atlantic future as long as it remains captive to irredentist rationales of the past," she added.

On behalf of the Greek Church, Metropolitan Antimos of Thessaloniki made it clear that Greece would never agree that Macedonia name be stolen or used by its northern neighbours.

Thessaloniki mayor and MPs of various parties joined the condemnation. A number of daily newspapers commented the statement of Archbishop Stefan.

BIG EVENT AT MAKEDONIJA SQUARE FOR CYRILLIC ALPHABET

National.

Major happening will be held Monday at Makedonija Square for friends of the Cyrillic Alphabet. The event is part of project "As Long as I Write in Cyrillic, I Exist!", which aims to raise the conscience of all generations on the need of popularisation of Macedonian Cyrillic, its preservation, use and affirmation, and furthermore create large number of friends and supporters.

Several educative and fun contents are to be realised within the event, wherewith the use of Macedonian Cyrillic is to be popularized among the youngest and the adults. Theatre for Children and Youth is to perform "Macedonian Story", whereas "Zlatno Slavejce" choir will also entertain children along with Ivce Pivce. Later in the evening, "St. Zlata Meglenska" choir will perform, followed by "Makedonski Rozi" orchestra and vocal Andrijana Janevska, and Vlatko Stefanovski as special guest.

Special banners will be placed at the square, whereat visitors can leave their messages of support, as well as graffiti and signatures. "Microsoft" prepared special entertainment for the youngest, whereas "VIP" mobile operator provided the space for screening episodes from "Busava Azbuka" series.

The campaign started on April 23 and is to last until June 10. It has been initiated by "Idea Plus Communications" and MIA-Macedonian Information Agency, supported by the scientific and artistic public, institutions, business community and media.

Though created more than ten centuries ago by Ss. Cyril and Methodius, the creators of the Slav literacy, and through the dedication of their student St. Clement of Ohrid, the Cyrillic is slowly and unjustly being forgotten and loses its step with the Latin letter. This has been especially been noticed in new global spheres - IT, communication and advertising. Hence it came the incentive for the campaign, which will include more activities, aimed at raising the conscience for the rightful use of the Cyrillic.

Special website has been designed on this occasion(www.mojatakirilica.com.mk), whereat competition for creating proper Cyrillic computer fonts has been announced. The Cyrillic font has been placed on the website, with a free download. Three additional fonts are to be created by the end of campaign, which would also be placed and would be available for use. All events and news of all activities regarding the campaign will be regularly published and updated. The website has a children's corner, enabling them to learn the alphabet through games.

MACEDONIAN OPPOSITION OFFICE ATTACKED

National.

The Gostivar office of Macedonia`s main Albanian opposition party were damaged overnight when attackers pelted it with stones.

Police said perpetrators, still unknown, had thrown stones at the building of the Democratic Union for Integration, DUI, and broken its windows.

The DUI called on the police to react and again accused Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska of doing nothing to prevent violence against DUI members and property.

Friday's attack was the latest of several dozen violent incidents that have taken place since the start of campaigning for the June 1 parliamentary elections.

One man has been killed, several DUI headquarters have come under small-arms fire, and DUI leader Ali Ahmeti claims that he has been the target of an assassination attempt.

If it continues, the violence could seriously hamper the country’s bid to enter the EU and NATO, senior officials from these organisations have said.

Macedonia, already an EU candidate country, hopes to secure a firm date for the start of accession talks this autumn.

There are no official documents to pin point the number of Macedonians in Albania, however, according to the Macedonians in SE Albania, Tirana and other cities, there are at least 120,000 Macedonians.

    SPEEDY NATO ACCESSION

    National.

NATO’s Chief has been urged to do all he can to speed Macedonia’s bid to join the alliance in a letter by key diplomats and academics.

“Any interruption in the path toward NATO or EU membership by a deserving would-be member sends a most disconcerting message to the region,” a group of 20 prominent European and United States’ diplomats, academics, and international officials said Monday in a joint letter to NATO chief, Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

“Given the rejection by Greece of the United Nations mediator’s compromise proposal to resolve the name dispute, ‘Republic of Macedonia (Skopje)’, made after intensive consultations with the parties in the run-up to the Bucharest Summit, we are concerned that no satisfactory solution will be found in time to meet the July deadline,” they add.

In order for Macedonia to keep pace with its Adriatic Charter colleagues, Albania and Croatia, which received invitations to join NATO at the time Macedonia should have done, NATO said a solution to the name dispute must be found by July when the countries are signing the accession protocol.

The group advises NATO chief not to push Macedonians towards yet another concession regarding their identity.

They argue that Macedonians made significant identity concessions with the signing of the NATO and U.S. sponsored peace accord in 2001 that ended the six month conflict between ethnic Albanian insurgents and Macedonia security forces.

“Mounting more pressure on the Macedonians to make additional concessions on their identity could be counterproductive,” the letter reads.

The group also notes that the Greek refusal to accept Macedonia’s NATO accession even under the provisional name “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” goes against the United Nations Interim Accord that Greece signed back in1995.

Under this, Athens is obliged not to block Skopje’s effort to join international institutions as long as it is done under the provisional name.

The answer to the dispute over Macedonia’s name lies in “fair and reasonable compromise by both sides along the lines proposed by the UN mediator on the eve of Bucharest,” reads the letter addressed to Scheffer.

Among those who have signed the letter are Soren Jessen-Petersen, former Special Representative of the Secretary General and UN Administrator in Kosovo, and former EU Special Representative to Macedonia.

Mort Abramowitz, former US Assistant Secretary of State, Daan Everts, former head of OSCE Mission to Kosovo, Gerald Knaus, the Chairman of European Stability Initiative, Edward P. Joseph, former Director of the International Crisis Group and Mark Leonard, the Director of European Council on Foreign Relations, are also signatories.

NOT FROM THE NORTH, BUT FROM THE SOUTH

    National.

Russians and other Slavs did not migrate from the north to the south, instead they originated from the south and moved to the north, claimed Russian academician Valery Chudinov, who takes part at first international congress titled “Pre-Cyrillic Literacy and Pre-Christian Culture among Slavs”, held in Pushkin near St. Petersburg, Russia.

Two Macedonian authors, academician Tome Bosevski and Aristotel Tentov PhD, presented their work at the congress regarding deciphering the text inscribed on the Rosetta Stone, alongside the ancient Egyptian and Greek languages, the so-called Demotic language, which the Macedonian scholars claim is an ancient Macedonian alphabet and most probably pre-Slavic.

Professor Tentov presented the latest results from the research, elaborating the methodology of identifying the signs, words, grammar rules, dividing them into words and sentences of the ancient Macedonian syllabic alphabet.

Addressing the congress, academician Bosevski stressed the importance of the ancient Macedonian alphabet on the Rosetta Stone, taking into account it was the official alphabet of one of the early Macedonian states, created after the decay of Alexander the Great’s kingdom.

The three-day scientific convention, which gathers 70 scholars, mainly from Slavic countries, will end on Wednesday.

Leningrad State University “Pushkin”, State University for Management, Academy of Fundamental Sciences and Capital Financial Humanitarian Academy organize this international scientific congress.

    GREEK ENVOY REBUFFS MACEDONIA COMPLAINTS

    National.

The abuse of Macedonian truckers in Greece are individual incidents which do not reflect Athens’ policy, Greece’s envoy to Skopje claims.

The cases “should be solved discreetly,” Greek ambassador Alexandra Papadopoulou told Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski at the meeting of European Ambassadors in Skopje on Tuesday.

She said Greek police are already investigating the cases but pointed out that the probes would have been more efficient if the truckers had reported the incidents while still in Greece.

Last week Macedonian police received a series of reports from returning truck drivers from Greece that they were allegedly stopped by unknown groups on Greek highways and under the threat of violence were forced to remove any vehicle markings with the letters ‘MK’ while being filmed and verbally abused.

On Monday Skopje officially protested to Athens and Crvenkovski condemned the incident during a meeting with EU ambassadors in Macedonia saying that a solution to the long standing “name” row between the two countries can not be reached by applying power and pressure from Greece.

During the recent two months the row has stalled most of the tourist traffic between the two countries and also affected trade ties. Trains from Macedonia’s national railway company, Macedonian Railroads and the national air carrier Macedonian Airlines have been banned from entering Greek territory.

On the other side, Greek companies operating in Macedonia are seeing an increasing boycott of their products by Macedonia citizens.

MD: Yeah, like if they reported it to the Greek police, they would get some help by them and be taken seriously, don´t make us laugh! We think the police would even smile and join the abusers!

GRUEVSKI ATTENDS GATHERING OF MACEDONIANS FROM AEGEAN MACEDONIA

    National.

On occasion of the 60th anniversary from the exile of Macedonians from the Aegean part of Macedonia, a gathering was held Sunday in Skopje's recreational center "Saraj".

Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski addressed the gathering, organized by the Coordination Committee of the associations of Macedonians from the Aegean part of Macedonia.

"When I speak about our history, my feeling and intention is best described through the words of former Israeli PM Ehud Barak, uttered at the holocaust conference in 2000, 'Although I have forgiven, I swore not to forget anything and remember everything. The care for one's past, the non-forgetting is another trait of the civilized world. It represents the foundation of identity'", said Gruevski.

He added, "There is no administrative method to erase the memory of who you are. Yes, force can subdue and cover the existence of a truth, but this cannot be eternal. I understand the position of our neighbor. This is not fear from us, from our alleged pretensions, but fear from the truth".

Gathering participants are to adopt a declaration on the Greek genocide on Macedonians.

Moreover, the event will be enriched through the performance of cultural-artistic clubs "Tanec" from Skopje, and "Drimkol" from Vevcani, as well as a number of entertainers.
