Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis is about to send a harsh reply to the letter of his Macedonian counterpart Nikola Gruevski regarding his attempt to bring up the Macedonian issue in Greece.
Greek newspapers said on Wednesday that Karamanlis' Cabinet members have already drafted the reply letter to Gruevski. The letter is likely to be posted on Thursday.
The same sources said Karamanlis is set to write a letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and notify the European Union and NATO about the matter.
The incoming letter to Macedonian prime minister will express Greece's outrage and strong opposition to bringing-up the issue of recognition of Macedonian minority and restitution of assets of Macedonians who had been expelled from Greece during the Greek civil war.
Gruevski wrote the letter to his Greek counterpart earlier this week, seeking recognition of Macedonian minority and restitution of assets of Macedonian refugees from the Greek civil war. The letter makes the headlines in Greek newspapers.
Elephteros Typos daily says Karamanlis is likely to send a reply letter to Skopje despite the demands from opposition PASOK, which insisted that the reply be sent indirectly through the United Nations.
"Now that he enjoys the U.S. backing, Gruevski is asking a lot in order to get a single thing," Elephteros Typos said.
Ethnos daily describes Gruevski's demands as interference in Greece's domestic affairs.
Kathimerini daily says Athens views as provocation the recent naming of two branches of Macedonian private university in Britain - Alexander and Filip the Macedonian. Athens will submit a note of protest to London soon.
The naming of these two universities outraged the nationalist party LAOS, which urged the Greek government to close the border with Macedonia.

Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski wrote a letter to his Greek counterpart Costas Karamanlis, urging recognition of Macedonian minority and settlement of the issues related to Macedonian refugees of the civil war in Greece.
Prime Minister-designate calls for extra efforts by Greek authorities to recognize the Macedonian minority in Greece, who should be entitled to the basic human rights in line with the international standards on mother tongue education (Macedonian), cherish cultural traditions and customs though various forms of organization, use of Macedonian language in local institutions.
Gruevski singles out a problem stemming from Greece's civil war, when hundreds of thousands of people (most of them ethnic Macedonians) fled the country. " These people, who were born in Greece and now are citizens of the Republic of Macedonia, are subjected to triple discrimination: they cannot reclaim their assets, they face serious obstacles when entering Greece, and they are not entitled to acquire a dual citizenship - Macedonian and Greek though they had been born and brought-up in Greece," Gruevski said in the letter
MD: Good move! Karamanlis will likely respond to the letter by the end of this week.

On occasion of the release of Macedonian film “Before the Rain”, directed by Milco Mancevski by U.S. publishing house “Criterion Collection”, intended for the U.S. market, a DVD promotion of the film was held Thursday in Skopje national and university library “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
“The U.S. publishing house released the cult film on June 24. This is the first commercial edition of our most successful film, whereas ‘The New York Times’ has already included it among the 1,000 best films of all times”, said film critic Marina Kostova at the promotion.
She stressed such events confirm the value of cultural diplomacy. “No money can buy this publicity. No money can buy a work’s presentation at global media. ‘Before the Rain’ opens a very important dimension of our originality, because our existence can not be denied by no one, Macedonia and the Macedonian identity are an irrefutable fact”, she added.
Film director Mancevski said after the promotion that very few foreign films are released in America.
“When I worked on the film, my greatest joy was to finish it. To me, ‘Before the Rain’ is a nice thing, but not essential. The essential thing is the dialogue between the author and the work. It is nice that the film is present at the central market, but at the same time sad that such a DVD cannot be purchased in Macedonia”, stressed Mancevski.
Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, Finance Minister Trajko Slaveski, Ministry of Culture State Secretary Elizabeta Kanceska-Milevska, a number of actors, and renowned individuals attended the promotion.

1.552 cases from the Republic of Macedonia have been filed so far in the European Court of Human Rights, whereas 38 verdicts have been reached, affirming violations of some of the provisions stemming from the Convection for Protection of Human Rights, notes Mirjana Lazarova - Trajkovska, the only Macedonian judge in the Human Rights Tribunal in Strasbourg.
- The number of cases from Macedonia has increased and there's a tendency the number to rise. In early 2007 the total number of cases was at 700, whereas by the end of 2007 the number of registered cases reached 1.352. This year, 200 cases have been submitted before the Court, says Lazarova - Trajkovska.
Thus far, 38 verdicts have been reached, determining violations of some of the provisions of the Convection for Protection of Human Rights.
Out of the total number of cases, she adds, most of them end as cases that are unauthorised. Out of those which ended with reached verdicts, however, are mainly related with the right of fair trial, but there are some verdicts referring to the article 3 of the Convection i.e. torture prohibition. Several verdicts are referring to property protection. One case was closed with friendly settlement and the same procedure is under way for additional 20 cases.
Even though the bulk of the cases apply to the right of fair trial, at this moment before the Court there are cases in relation to the right of freedom and security, the right of respecting private and family life, freedom of expression, freedom of association, stressed Lazarova - Trajkovska.
Regarding the decision reached by the Court on registering the party of Macedonians in Bulgaria, OMO Ilinden Pirin, and whether there are instruments for Sofia to abide by the decision, the judge says the execution of verdicts is not within the Court's jurisdiction, but within the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.
- All verdicts reached by this Court are binding and there's no possibility for them to be avoided or not to be observed. There have been numerous attempts to ignore the Court's decisions and verdicts. This is an old international organisation that protects its dignity and every country is being monitored for every verdict. The instruments and mechanisms are in authorisation of the Committee of Ministers with a possibility of implementing them in every country for every verdict equally, says the Macedonian judge in the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, Mirjana Lazarova - Trajkovska in an interview with MIA

Horns from a prehistoric antelope have been excavated in a mass grave of prehistoric animals in Delcevo village Stamer these days.
Scientists from the Macedonian Museum of Natural Sciences say the fossil remains of the prehistoric antelope are about 10 million years old.
The excavation activities are funded by the Ministry of Culture, following the accidental revelation of the mass grave in February last year, when fossil remains of a giraffe, rhino and deer were found.
According to the only paleontologist in Macedonia, professor Risto Garevski, the fossils date from 10,000 years of the Upper Miocene.
“Some Stamer fossils date from the 4-8 million years ago. The scientific world believes the first genetic line of the primitive man dates from 4-6 million years ago, and the oldest remains have been found in Africa, dating from 3,300 years ago. That is why we believe we can reveal the first genetic line of the primitive man here”, says Museum program director Svetozar Petkovski.
